The Gîtes of Château de Vaulx

Good morning,

In high season we favor weekly rentals: from Saturday to Saturday.

Vaulx is a magnificent castle, located on a dome, overlooking 360° the Charollais and the Brionnais. The views are breathtaking. The house is beautifully decorated and equipped, the bedding is comfortable and sheets and linens are provided.

Barry is there to welcome you and is available on site during your stay for any questions regarding the gîtes.

Vaulx hosts two gîtes: the Damas gîte is in the eastern half of the castle, covering more than 420 m², and can accommodate up to 14 people.

The Montjardin gîte is a 110 m² apartment for 5 people, in the L-shaped annex of the castle, overlooking the flower garden.

We offer several options, and favor weekly rentals during high season weeks.

You will find special offers via the dedicated tab, in addition to the "weekly" formula.

View the photos, they will tell you better about the house than a string of words.

A little history :

In 1886, a regional historian described the Château de Vaulx in the following terms:

Well proportioned, elegant in its simplicity, sitting in the most beautiful position of height, it has its main facade facing south. From this facade, we have a pleasant view over an immense expanse of country: Saint-Julien de Civry, Dyo, Saint-Germain, Amanzé and beyond, as long as the eye is lost, the blue mountains, between which old Dun, etc. A panorama as vast as it is varied.

Nowadays, fortunately, the landscape is unchanged. The house was extended with two wings to the east and west by Léon Geoffray at the end of the 19th century.

The Château de Vaulx de Chizeul is on the border of Charolais and Brionnais. This castle, whose origins date back to the 14th century, was the property of the de Choiseul family until 1435. The name "de Chizeul" is a distortion of the family name.

From 1471, the lords of Vaulx were the Damas, an important Burgundian family, a branch of which was named Damas de Vaux. The castle, the strongholds, hamlets and lands attached to it remained the property of Damascus until 1793, that is to say for more than three centuries.

The castle occupied a dominant position in the region. Its dimensions were imposing (91 meters by 29 meters) and it consisted of a square keep, a stately residence, an attic and a prison which was used to serve the sentences imposed by the lord who had the right of justice on his lands.

The castle suffered during the wars of religion in the 16th century and in 1793 when it was sold as national property, the family having emigrated during the Revolution. All that remains today is a ruin which was undoubtedly the prison.

200 meters from the old Vaulx de Chizeul castle stands the current Vaulx castle. This is the former home of the main officers and general farmers of the Vaulx estate, that is to say the administrators and trusted men of the lord. The role of the administrators was all the more important as the Damas only resided for a short time in Vaulx being either in Paris or in the castle of Dyo of which they were also the lords.

Part of the current Vaulx castle dates back to the 16th century as evidenced by the stones dated 1563 on the facade. The castle was gradually modified and expanded to achieve its current appearance. In the 19th century, the castle was the property of the Geoffray family and in particular of Léon Geoffray (1852-1927) who was French ambassador to Spain and one of the architects of the Franco-British rapprochement before the First World War.
